Armenian Nutmeg Cake (or Slice)

The name is given by Stephen, who has always called it the nutcase slice. It's true name is Armenian Nutmeg Cake.

This is a cake, but we have mostly eaten it like a slice. It can be frozen, and is a nice treat if you want something not to overly sweet.

Ingredients

1 ½ cups brown sugar
1 cup plain flour
1 cup self-raising flour
4 oz (113g) butter
1 egg
¾ cup milk
1 teaspoon nutmeg
½ cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon bicarb of soda

Method

Preheat oven to 180°C (or 160°C for fan-forced). Grease a slice pan.
Sift and mix flours, sugar and butter until crumbly.
Press firmly about ½ of the mixture into the slice pan.
Add milk, bicarb soda, egg and nutmeg into mixture. Mix well.
Pour batter onto the base. Sprinkle with the walnuts.
Bake for 20-25 mins, or until golden brown or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.
Let stand for 10-15 mins, before turning out. Cut into slices and freeze.
